1. Check for Injuries

First, check yourself and any passengers for injuries. If anyone is seriously hurt, call 999 immediately and request an ambulance. Don’t move injured people unless there’s immediate danger such as fire risk.

2. Move to a Safe Place

If possible, move yourself and other road users away from live traffic. This is especially critical on fast roads and motorways around West Yorkshire. Never stand in front of or behind vehicles, other driver errors could cause secondary accidents.

3. Make Your Vehicle Visible

Switch on your hazard lights immediately. On slower roads, you can use a warning triangle placed at least 45 metres behind your vehicle. Never use a warning triangle on the motorway—it’s too dangerous.

4. Exchange Details

UK law requires you to exchange the following information with all drivers involved:

• Full name and address

• Registration number of each vehicle

• Insurance details and insurance provider name

• Contact telephone numbers

If the other party refuses to provide insurance information, note down as much witness information as you can, including their vehicle model and any visible damage.

5. Document the Scene

If it’s safe to do so, take clear photos of:
